The Forest Entrepreneur Training program is a pioneering initiative offering specialized training and mentorship to Sierra Nevada’s aspiring entrepreneurs within the forestry and wooden products industry. The program aims to foster a connection between local community members and the flourishing forest industry, facilitating sustainable careers that support local economies while also preserving our forest landscapes.

Starting this spring, the tuition-free, five-week program provides comprehensive training on business creation related to forest management, plant rejuvenation, and small-scale timber product manufacturing. The program is crafted to ensure participants gain practical knowledge through hands-on projects and industry expert guidance. An integral part of the program will be developing business plans and understanding the crucial role of marketing in business expansion.

Kristin York, Vice President of a local Business Council, insists on the significance of fostering self-sustaining economies in forested communities. York envisions a future where local entrepreneurs use natural resources to develop innovative ventures, resulting in job creation and local economic elevation. Notably, this promising model merges economic growth with environmental sustainability in the face of wildfire threats.

The program also aims to equip mountain communities to adapt to changing climate and population growth, with a focus on the potential threat of wildfires. Emphasis is put on industries such as sustainable construction and geological management that are environmentally sound and hold great promise. The initiative encourages use of sustainable technologies and knowledge to ensure environmental protection while also addressing population and climate changes.

Robert Trent, founder of a well-known nonprofit business incubator, will lead the workshop. Trent expresses that the training program is ideal for those with an entrepreneurial spirit and concern for their community’s welfare. The workshop strives to impart practical entrepreneurial techniques to promote local community development. Apart from technical skills, Trent underlines the essential role of a positive mindset and strength of character in the successful launch and growth of a business.
