Elon Musk called President Donald Trump on Monday night before expressing regret over his harsh criticism of the president during a public feud last week, two sources told CNN. The call, which lasted only moments, followed conversations on Friday between Vice President JD Vance, White House chief of staff Susie Wiles, and Musk regarding the dispute. Musk subsequently deleted his most critical social media posts about Trump, including those related to Jeffrey Epstein and a suggestion that Trump should be impeached.

On Wednesday, Musk went even further, admitting that some of his posts “went too far.” He wrote on X, “I regret some of my posts about President last week. They went too far.”

According to sources, Republican lawmakers and Trump allies have been reaching out to Musk, urging him to reconcile with Trump and support his domestic policy bill. During Musk’s time as Trump’s tech ally, many of the president’s close advisers formed relationships with Musk.

These relationships were utilized to try to smooth things over between Musk and Trump. House Speaker Mike Johnson told CNN he was in touch with Musk to act as a peacemaker. “I think the temperature’s being turned down, and I’m very hopeful that these two will reconcile,” Johnson said.

Despite the movement toward reconciliation, many close to Trump hope Musk will publicly support the bill.

Musk regrets harsh criticism

“He has real concerns, but we’re all hoping he comes around.

His words carry a lot of weight,” a source said. The White House remains open to the possibility that Musk and Trump will fully repair their relationship. While initially, it seemed Musk’s attacks might permanently damage their alliance, insiders say Trump has not been as harsh toward Musk in recent days.

On Thursday, Vice President Vance recorded a podcast where he expressed that Musk’s public criticism of Trump was a “huge mistake” but hoped Musk would “come back into the fold.” Vance suggested that if Musk would “chill out a little bit,” everything would be fine. Following the public feud, Musk began showing support for Trump again over the weekend, as unrest and immigration protests erupted in Los Angeles. Musk, who has long supported closed borders and stopping illegal immigration, appeared to align with the Trump administration’s stance.

Additionally, Musk re-followed several Trump allies on social media, signaling a move towards reconciliation. He also shared a Trump post criticizing California Gov. Gavin Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass.

Trump, in a brief phone interview, responded positively to Musk’s regrets, saying, “I thought it was very nice that he did that.”
